GENERAL INFORMATION
Oahu means, "the gathering place" and is Hawaii's third largest island, Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii being larger. Almost all of the people who live in Hawaii, live on the Island of Oahu, home of the state capital, Honolulu, the only city in the state of Hawaii. Because of Oahu's superior harbors, Pearl Harbor and Honolulu Harbor, King Kamehameha moved his headquarters to Oahu once he'd consolidated all the islands into one kingdom. Legend relates that Papa, the Hawaiian earth mother, returned from Tahiti to the Hawaiian Islands, she learned that her husband, Wakea, had been unfaithful and had impregnated Hina, a young goddess. Papa, scorned and furious, took a young lover, Lua. The liason yielded her a man-child, Oahu, the sixth of the great island children. In geological actuality, Oahu was the second of the major Hawaiian Islands, after Kauai, of the Hawaiian chain to erupt from the sea. The Koolau Range of mountains run almost the entire north-south length of the island dividing the island into the moist, green windward side and the arid, dry leeward side. While the Waianae range is smaller, its Kaala summit is the highest point on Oahu rising 4,020 feet above sea level. Diamond Head crater, just east of Waikiki Beach is perhaps Oahu's most famous landmark. To see a photograph of Diamond Head click here. To view an aerial photo of Diamond Head Crater click here. Interestingly, many people misspell Hawaii as Hawaai, Hawai, Howaii or Hawii and Hawaiian as Hawaain, Hawian, Hawaian, Hawaiaan, Hawiian, Hawiin, Hawain, Haiwain and Hawaiin and, of course, their own languages and creoles (pidgins) such as langue Hawaiienne and Hawaiien.

For instance if you stand in front of the Kuhio Beach Webcam, your friends at home can click on the "streaming video" version and watch you talk, wave and do the hula! Setting a time to stand in front of traffic cams and wave to faraway people who were viewing the cameras via the Internet was mentioned along with yours truly and this very website in the front page headline story of Hawaii's largest daily newspaper on Friday, August 13, 1999. Try it if you visit Hawaii - it's the 21st Century version of the living postcard!

The Sharks of Hawaii
Basic information about the more than forty species of sharks found in Hawaiian waters. By and large, sharks present almost no threat to human beings though the news media's sensationalism may make the rare attacks seem otherwise. The sharks that have posed the most hazards in Hawaii have been the galapagos sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, gray reef sharks and tiger sharks who stay close to the shorelines. While great white sharks can be dangerous, they do not usually swim near the beaches because of their feeding habits in the open ocean. For more info about the habits of various species of sharks, to see photos, learn fascinating facts, inspect shark research, discover safety tips, view suggested reading and find links to more shark websites, click, here.
